Draytek Vigor recover from failed firmware upgrade

If you screw a firmware upgrade – or put on the wrong one as requested by Draytek support, shagging the router in the process – there is a recovery, which doesn’t appear to be documented….

Acquire correct F/W and Draytek’s “Router Tools”.

Connect a PC, via cable, with a cat5, and assign a static IP in 192.168.1.0/24 range, eg 192.168.1.10

Load Firmware Update Util AS ADMINISTRATOR

Enter 192.168.1.1 as router IP (don’t search for router)

Select the new (correct!) firmware you downloaded

Drop firewalls on PC if necessary, installer *should* put in rules, but I found that I had to drop firewall anyway

Put router in TFTP mode – press and hold reset until left 3 LEDs flash rapidly. (192.168.1.1 should be pingable at this point)

Press Send in Firmware Update Util

Firmware should upload (if it times out, check firewall)

The next step is checking for “Router Activity” – do not touch router for several minutes – it should eventually restart with its old settings (which may be a different IP address/range, depending on how you had it configured before). Do NOT power cycle during this period!

Once router fully rebooted by itself, your should be able to connect via its old IP
