Upgrading BT 5861/5830 firmware without a console cable

This is the method we usually use to removed the limited BT firmware and replace with the full Efficient/Siemens firmware on these routers.

Download the Config Manager v396 from http://snake.feldtest.de and also the latest firmware from there as well (if yours is actually badged BT, then it only has a 1Mb flash (unless its been upgraded) and cannot run the latest firmware).

If you have a 5861, download the correct ASIC.AIC from http://www.uk-bug.net and also V5 firmware if you only have 1Mb flash can be downloaded from there as well.

Install Config Manager (assuming default location of c:\dsl for rest of this guide)

Set your PC IP to static, with address 192.168.254.100

Copy the downloaded kernel.f2k to c:\dsl, along with asic.aic if applicable (5861 only)

Load Config Manager, select Tools, then BOOTP. Fill in the details as prompted.

Turn off router, press and hold reset switch on it, and power on. After approx 10 secs, all LEDs light up briefly, release reset at this point.

This should network boot the router, and allow you to connect to it with telnet.

Type telnet 192.168.254.254 and log in.

    Type the following commands.

    format disk

    copy tftp@192.168.254.100:kernel.f2k kernel.f2k

    copy tftp@192.168.254.100:asic.aic asic.aic (only for 5861)

    reboot

Once router has rebooted, you should now be able to use a web browser to access web gui http://192.168.254.254 to perform final configuration.

(we intend to enhance this guide based on feedback, so please let us know how you get on Smile

Re: Upgrading BT 5861/5830 firmware without a console cable

Hi Tried the reset trick - but nothing - i get no lan lights when I do that. Can telnet in.

If I recycle the power, I can get to the very basic 1-page BT screen at 254.254

This is a SB5830 Siemens badged unit - could I be being thick here ??

    TIA

I have also answered your query over on UK-BUG, but will try a more complete answer here.  I just need to do this again to refresh myself with the exact procedure for the BT knobbled sb5830.  Its definately do-able, I use these routers myself.

Or if you are local, you could take up my offer I made on UK-BUG Wink

Only just looked on uk bug - hadnt followed the thread there once I came here - and didnt realise it was the same person :-)

Not that local to you I'm afraid.

As for the mac, I did wait a while - and used telnet from a XP CLI rather than using the tools (which were hard to find - your link failed for me). And doing that I never see the LAN lights come on, on the front.

If you do manage to refresh your memory, I'll have another bash.

    Many thanks for your asisstance

Yup, process is same as for EN5861.

Press and hold reset while powering on. After all LEDs come on, release the reset switch - this will tell it to netboot.

At this stage, you need to configure your bootp server (I use Weird Solutions freeware one) to reply to that mac address with IP address of tftp server (again, Weird freebie) and the IP address to assign to router.  tftp needs to already have kernel.f2k loaded up.

That should get you far enough to boot with unrestricted kernel, then you just need to format the router, copy over the kernel, and restart.

Re: Upgrading BT 5861/5830 firmware without a console cable

Cool - realising the process I use the config manager tools and got the new front end up and running.

Then, I changed it's local LAN IP, restarted- and now when I hit it with the new IP, I get the old BT logiun screen back again !

    I used the 1.3Mb 5830 firmware file....any bright ideas ???

Re: Upgrading BT 5861/5830 firmware without a console cable

Once you have it netbooted on Siemens interface, telnet in at issue following commands (this is for sb5830 only for anyone else watching this thread!)

    format disk

    copy kernel.f2k@tftp:192.168.254.250 kernel.f2k

    reboot

Making sure the IP specified in copy command matches the tftp server addr.

    Then you should be sorted.

Let us know how you get on.
