There is a way that works fro low volume work, we dont have a thermal printer (see primemark post as to why) but our till is linked to a networked laser, we dont want to printer everyone a A4 receipt so we have the printer on pause!
If someone buys a high value item all i do is:- cancel all docs, then un-pause, send the receipt through, then pause once again.
As i said its not perfect but it seems to work for us, untill our thermal printer arrives..... (or we get money back to buy one else where!)
